Springtime brings beautiful weather, but beauty comes with a price. Spring is known for its high effect of allergy sufferers coming out of winter hibernation. If you suffer from seasonal allergies, you’re all too familiar with the sneezing, congestion, and other symptoms that come with the season.

Although there are plenty of helpful over-the- counter medications and treatments to help alleviate symptoms, one of the best ways to cure a disease is to avoid certain products and materials that trigger your allergies in the first place from chemicals, household items, and mold itself.

Not only does spring bring its worst wave of allergies, but the exposure of chemicals could cause a chemical allergy from your immune system reacting to it. On top of that, when a chemical allergy works together with springtime allergies, beware of your worst nightmare.

The first chemical that can enhance allergies are fragrances. Fragrance products, such as candles, air fresheners, and perfumes, are one of the most common sources of spring allergies. They contain a variety of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other chemicals that can trigger a variety of symptoms, such as sneezing, runny nose, and congestion. If possible, try to avoid using these products on a consistent basis or opt for fragrance-free versions. Do not feel like you have to avoid it completely and keep yourself away from good smells; be wise with the timeframe you use it. If you are having an influx of allergies such as sneezing, coughing, reacting, then maybe it is best to put that match and perfume bottle down.

The second chemical that may cause allergies are cleaning supplies. Cleaning supplies, such as bleach, ammonia, and other cleaning products, can trigger allergies by releasing VOCs into the air. Natural cleaners are better because they are non-toxic, biodegradable, and safer for the environment. Natural cleaners are also often more effective than chemical cleaners, as natural ingredients such as vinegar, baking soda, and lemon juice can be very effective cleansers. On top of that, they are actually a lot cheaper than chemical cleaners. Opt for natural cleaners and products that don’t contain harsh chemicals and lessen the exposure to allergy symptoms.

Even your own home could deceive your immune system into an allergic reaction. This is why it is important to change after spending much time outdoors to prevent any pollen and dust from lingering within these household items.

The first item to watch out for are feather pillows. Feather pillows are a common source of allergies due to the dust mites and other allergens that accumulate in the feathers. If you have allergies, consider switching to a hypoallergenic pillow to help reduce your symptoms.

The most devious item within your own household that could cause major allergies without consistent deep cleans are carpets. Due to the dust, dust mites, pet dander, pollen, and other allergens that can become trapped in the fibers, carpets provide an ideal environment for dust mites to breed, which can cause an allergic reaction in some people. Vacuuming regularly and using an air purifier can help reduce the risk of an allergic reaction. If possible, switch to a hard flooring surface, such as hardwood or tile, to help minimize your exposure to allergens in the long-term.

Lastly but most definitely not least, mold is one of the most common causes of spring allergies and can be found in damp areas of the home, such as the bathroom and basement. Mold releases tiny particles called spores into the air where they can cause hay fever-like symptoms, such as sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, and a sore throat. In people with asthma, exposure to mold can trigger an asthma attack. Air-purifiers and keeping your home well-ventilated can help reduce the risk of mold growth.

If you suffer from spring allergies, these categories are some you should watch out for. By taking the necessary steps to reduce your exposure to allergens, you can help reduce your symptoms and enjoy the spring season for the beauty it is.
